Tree work in Witta
Old vine scrub and sicklethorn
Witta was first known as Teutoburgh, and Queensland Places says the Teutoburgh vine scrub was cleared for farms that grew corn and supplied milk for cheese making. Vine scrub is a kind of rainforest, so the big trees still standing along creeks, fence lines and paddock edges can be rainforest species with spreading buttress roots and heavy crowns. Trees like that are taken down in sections, and their stumps need a large grinder.
Council's invasive plant alert says sicklethorn sits high on the eradicate list for the Mary River catchment, and it asks people in the Witta area to check their properties. Clearing under and around trees can turn it up. Spiny climbers are identified before any control work, because similar native plants are habitat, and sicklethorn cuttings are disposed of so they cannot spread.

How it works
What happens after you get in touch
The council question is answered before the price, and nothing is booked until you have the quote in writing and have said yes to it.
- 1
Tell us about the tree
The suburb, what the tree stands near and what you would like done with it.

- 2
Someone comes to look
A tree contractor who covers your area sees the tree, the access and whatever is underneath it.

- 3
The council position is checked
Lot size, how close the tree is to the house and the mapping on the block decide whether an application comes first.

- 4
Quoted in writing
Scope, timber, stump and date set out on one page. Nothing is booked until you accept it.

Witta questions
The roost, the reserve and the tip
Is there a flying-fox roost in Witta?
One. Council's roost data lists a single site, recorded as Parkland Cres, Witta. Flying-foxes are protected in Queensland, so work on trees in or beside that roost waits on the colony, often until it moves on, and the same can apply on a neighbouring block.
Is the bushland next to some blocks council land?
Some of it is. A Witta lot was added to the Kirby's Road Environment Reserve with council's Environment Levy, and the reserve is under council management. Trees on that side of the boundary are council's to look after, so work next to it keeps cuttings, machinery and debris on the private side. That one lot covers about 68 hectares.
When is the Witta tip open?
Council's Witta Resource Recovery Centre opens from 8am to 5pm on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. On the other four days a load cannot be dropped in Witta, so a job then either chips the branches on site or allows for the longer run down the range.
