Tree work in Curramore
Tall forest on a steep western escarpment
Curramore Wildlife Sanctuary, on the western escarpment of the Maleny plateau, is mostly tall eucalypt or brush box forest with a vine forest understorey, Sunshine Coast News reported. Trees that size, with vines in their crowns, are usually dismantled in sections, and the vine is checked first, because it adds weight and can hide dead limbs.
Australian Wildlife Conservancy, which runs the sanctuary, has described it as very steep country, inaccessible by vehicles or quad bikes, so its weeding has been done by hand. On a private block that steep, a truck, chipper or elevated platform may not reach the tree, so the timber is lowered on ropes and often cut and left, or carried out, which adds time on the day.
Curramore also takes in part of Maleny National Park, which Queensland's protected area data lists at about 1880 hectares, held under the Nature Conservation Act 1992. Where a block shares a boundary with the park, trees on the park side belong to the state, and work on the private side keeps debris and machinery out.

Curramore questions
Burns in the park and five refuges
Does the national park in Curramore burn?
It does. The state's record of park fires lists a planned burn of about 393 hectares there in 2012. A wildfire of about 238 hectares burnt in the park in 2010, so trees along its boundary are worth keeping free of deadwood and low branches, and a burnt tree is checked for a hollowed base before work.
How many nature refuges are there in Curramore?
Five, on the state's mapping. The largest is Curramore Sanctuary Nature Refuge, followed by Rainforest Ridge, with three smaller ones: Garanyali, Curramore Farm Forest and Jilumbar. Each comes with a conservation agreement attached to the land, so a native tree on one is cut only where the agreement allows, and that is confirmed with the landholder first.
