Tree work in Palmwoods
From palm scrub to the duck pond
Palmwoods was first known as Merriman's Flat and took its present name when the North Coast railway opened. Queensland Places records that the uncleared scrub contained tall palm trees that could be split and used for guttering. Palms that tall near a house are taken down from the top, in pieces.
Over 150 native plant species have been identified along the short walking track around the lake at Kolora Park, known locally as the Palmwoods Duck Pond. The council says the park is also home to a flying fox roost, where the bats gather to rest and raise their young, and that flying foxes are protected animals. Trees on the park side of the fence are the council's.

Palmwoods questions
Three roosts, and trimming for the bats
Is Kolora Park the only roost in town?
No. The council's roost records list three roost sites in Palmwoods, recorded as Dunning St, Jubilee Dr and Kolora Park. A job near any of them may have to wait until the bats move on, or be kept to lighter work, and the quote should allow for that timing.
Can branches be cut back to keep bats off a property?
It has been done here. The council's flying fox management log for the Kolora roost records selective tree trimming of encroaching vegetation on a property in 2020, to prevent flying foxes roosting over private land. It was part of the council's management of the roost, so anyone with the same problem starts with the council.
