Tree removal, pruning and storm clean-ups in Battery Hill, including the blocks that back onto the bushland park and its flying-fox colony.
Tree work in Battery Hill
A protected colony among the houses
Council's flying-fox data lists one roost in the suburb, at Andrea Ahern Bushland Park, a small piece of bush among the houses. One of its February 2021 counts there found 10,256 little red flying-foxes.
Flying-foxes are protected in Queensland, and a colony that size brings droppings, noise and strict limits on disturbing it. That shapes tree work on the blocks around the park: how much is cut and when, planned with the roost in mind.

Battery Hill questions
Pups, the buffer trim and a flooded street
When should tree work near the roost wait?
Through spring and summer. In December 2021 the council named Andrea Ahern Park at Battery Hill as one of the mostly coastal roosts where pups had been seen, and the young stay with their mothers until they can fly. In those months, work beside the park waits or is kept to a few quiet cuts.
Can the bushland edge be cut back to keep the bats further off?
That is the council's job, and it has done it. Its log for the roost records trees along the fire trail being selectively trimmed in 2019, to increase the buffer distance along the southern and western boundary. On the private side of the fence the same care applies: low-impact cuts, and nothing cut over roosting bats.
Do storms hit Battery Hill hard?
Some do, like the severe storm cell that moved up the coast toward Caloundra in January 2024. A news report said the floodwater at one corner was like a river coming down Beerburrum Street. Storms like that bring gusts that drop limbs, and trees left standing in sodden ground lean or fall more easily.
