Tall gums in Alex Forest, heavy seas out front

Alex Forest Conservation Area holds wet eucalypt, open forest and lowland rainforest, and its big trees include flooded gum, bushbox and tallowwood. All three grow tall and carry heavy limbs. Where one stands near a house on the forest edge, it usually comes down, or is reduced, in sections lowered on ropes, while the trees inside the reserve are left to the council.

The council also manages the forest with fire. On 7 September 2023 it planned to burn a 1.5 hectare section of Alex Forest Conservation Area to reduce the forest fuels. For the homes alongside, clearing dead wood, loose bark and limbs over the roof and gutters leaves a fire in the reserve less to carry to the house.

Out front, heavy seas repeatedly diminished sand and exposed rock, and in 2013 a pipeline was built to replenish the beach. Trees on the foreshore and the exposed blocks behind it are pruned with the onshore wind in mind, and salt-burnt or storm-weakened limbs are looked at before the summer storms.

Alexandra Headland questions

A flying-fox nursery and the council's forest

When should tree work beside Alex Forest wait?

Through spring and summer. The council's December 2021 update on flying-foxes reported a maternity roost at Alex Forest Conservation Area, with pups seen there, and the council keeps to low-impact work around roosts in those months. Pups cannot fly at first and ride on their mothers, so pruning or removal on a neighbouring block is timed for after the birthing season, or kept light until then.

Can trees in Alex Forest be cut back from a yard that backs onto it?

No. The council's environment levy land register lists the reserve as two parcels of about 3.6 and 2.1 hectares, both under council management, so the trees in it are not a neighbour's to prune or remove. A job on a block behind it starts by working out which trees stand on the private side of the line.
