Tree work in Obi Obi

Landslips, rock bolts and a refuge

The 2022 floods brought landslips to Obi Obi. Transport and Main Roads repaired the slips on Obi Obi Road at two sites west of the Obi Obi range, using rock bolts, rock mattress and shotcrete to hold the slope against heavy rain. On a steep block nearby, the soil around a large tree is checked for cracking and root plate lift before any cut, and heavy machines wait until a saturated slope has drained.

The Queensland Government's nature refuge mapping lists Braehead Nature Refuge here, about 100.6 hectares, first gazetted in 2001. A refuge is held under a conservation agreement that binds the land, so on that property a native tree is removed only where the agreement allows it, and work on neighbouring land stays out of the refuge.

Obi Obi questions

The fire that put Obi Obi on alert

How big was the 2023 fire?

Queensland's park fire history maps a 2023 wildfire of about 288 hectares, filed under Obi Obi. Trees burnt in a fire like that are checked at the base for damage before anyone climbs or fells them.

Did Obi Obi get a warning to leave?

It did. On 1 November 2023, Sunshine Coast News reported a prepare to leave warning for Obi Obi, a watch and act alert issued as a large fire burned nearby. A warning like that is no time for tree work, so dead branches over the roof, trees crowding the house and limbs that could fall across the driveway are dealt with well before fire weather.
