Tree work in Buddina
Salt wind off the headland, dune sand underfoot
Point Cartwright Reserve looks over the mouth of the Mooloolah River, and the council says the plants on the exposed rocky headland thrive in high wind and salt. Gardens nearby get the same weather. Pruning on those blocks thins a crown to let the wind through, rather than reshaping it hard and leaving big exposed cuts.
The council's 2023 master plan for the reserve and La Balsa Park gave special consideration to littoral rainforest and other vegetation, which it describes as natural closed forest near the ocean. It means to protect and regenerate that forest, so work on a neighbouring block keeps branches, cuttings and machinery out of it and leaves its roots alone.
Queensland Places records that after the frontal dunes on this coast were lowered, cyclonic weather brought high seas that crashed over the reduced dunes, and present day Talinga Street was the most threatened area. Beachfront trees here stand in reworked dune sand, and after each major blow they are worth checking for lean and for roots the sea has undermined.

Buddina questions
Poison in the sand and a park tree that fell
Can a stump near the dunes be poisoned instead of ground out?
It is a poor choice in sand this loose. A council spokesperson said the damaged foreshore area here had grown, likely due to the herbicide spreading through the sand and killing more vegetation. Grinding keeps the chemical out of the dune and out of the neighbour's garden.
Who decides what happens to the dune trees in front of the houses?
The council. It launched investigations into further damage to trees and plants in a 250sqm area at the Buddina Beach foreshore reserve, and the dune vegetation is part of that reserve. Work on a beachfront block stops at the property line.
Are big old trees near paths and play areas worth a check?
Yes. The council's master plan notes that the fall of a large cotton tree left the La Balsa Park playground without shade. A mature cotton tree near a house, a path or a play area is worth inspecting for lean, decay and heavy limbs.
